🌊 Do I Have a Pool Leak?

All pools lose water naturally due to splash-out, backwashing, and evaporation—typically **1/8″ to 1/4″ per week**. If you're adding water multiple times a week or losing more than **1″ per week**, that’s a strong indicator of a leak.

🧪 DIY Leak Tests



🪣 Bucket Test

A simple way to compare evaporation to actual water loss.

Instructions:

1. Take a bucket ( it could be a mop bucket if that is all you have handy) and fill it to approximately 3/4 full
2. With a marker or tape, draw a line where the water level is on the bucket
3. Using tape, mark the water level on the pool
4. Place the bucket on the 2nd step of the pool so it is partially submerged and remains same temperature as the water in the pool
5. After 24 hours, check the levels in both the pool and the bucket. Are they the same as the original markings? Do they have the same level of water evaporation? Then you don’t have a leak. If the water loss in the pool is greater than in the bucket, you have a leak.

Results: If the pool’s water level drops more than the bucket’s, you likely have a leak.





💧 Meter Test (for Autofill Pools)



Use your home’s water meter to check for hidden leaks.

Instructions:

Make sure no water is being used anywhere on your property

1. Locate your water meter and document the current reading
2. After approximately 30 minutes, document the meter reading
3. If the reading is the same, there do not seem to be any leaks from any appliance connected to the water main. This tells us the autofill on your pool has not demanded any water. If the reading has changed, it could indicate a leak either in your pool or any other appliance using main pressure.

Results: If the reading increased, water is being drawn—likely due to a leak or autofill activity.



🔍 When Is the Water Loss Happening?



▶️ While Equipment Is Running

Likely a pressure-side leak (in return lines). Leaks worsen when plumbing is under pressure.



⏹️ While Equipment Is Off

May indicate a suction-side leak (in vacuum lines). Air may be pulled into the system—watch for:

Check the pool structure itself:

Look for:

Check carefully all around the filter, pump, valves and heater. Also check the ground area for wet or soggy areas.

📏 Water Stabilizes at a Certain Level

Inspect that level carefully—this usually points directly to the leak’s location.
