For pool owners who have had a liner pool for years, it's not unreasonable to need to replace the liner a few times in the pool's lifetime, not to mention repairing tears or sagging in between. Depending on the style and quality of the liner you choose, the costs can range from an average of $3195 and up.

Now while cost is a major factor in replacing the liner, there are other factors you need to consider.

Liner Replacement Factors

Often we think of inground pools being the only ones having vinyl liners, but in reality, your above-ground pool also needs a liner repair and replacement.

The cost to replace an above-ground pool liner tends to be less than an in-ground pool. Typically, the cost is around 50% less for the liner itself.

Material: Size, Thickness and Pattern

I'll bet you're thinking vinyl liners are just vinyl, correct? That would be no, there are a variety of factors which make the material go up in price. An example is a 16' x 32' liner might be $3195 at 20 mil, but triple that size and shape, it will be a much higher price point.

Increasing the size, increases the cost, which makes sense. But the thickness will also increase the cost. The standard thickness in the industry is 20 mil thick and can go up to 30 mil thick. The thicker the liner, the more durability it will have, thus the higher price.

On top of that, the pattern you choose will also determine the cost. Typically a basic blue liner will be the most cost effective option. However, if you prefer a design or specific pattern, this will increase the price.

Product and Installation of Vinyl Liners

So, the type of liner will affect the overall cost of the liner, but did you realize the product used to install and hold the liner will play a role in the cost of replacing the liner?

The above-ground pool generally uses overlap, unibead or j-hook mechanisms to seal the edge of the liner with overlap being the least costly. Overlap is also not as long lasting as some of the other options - but the choice is ultimately yours to make.

In thinking of the in-ground options, the cost naturally increases. Why you ask? With the above factors, more often than not, in-ground pools are custom shapes and sizes. All of those add-ons you wanted when the pool was built, can make the installation a bit tricky, which adds more cost to you.
